When Is School Starting in the San Antonio Metro (2025–26)?
Some school districts in the San Antonio area have already begun the new 2025–26 academic year. La Vernia ISD kicked things off on Monday, August 4, making it the earliest district to start that year. Close behind, East Central ISD started classes on Thursday, August 7.
For the majority of districts, however, students will be heading back to school mid-August. Northside ISD, Northeast ISD, Southwest ISD, and South San Antonio ISD will welcome students back on Monday, August 11.
Districts like San Antonio ISD, Alamo Heights ISD, Harlandale ISD, IDEA Public Schools, Judson ISD, and Fort Sam Houston ISD will then follow on Wednesday, August 13.
Randolph Field ISD and Schertz‑Cibolo‑Universal City ISD start on Thursday, August 14. Somerset ISD follows on Monday, August 18, Comal ISD on Tuesday, August 19, and Marion ISD rounds out the lineup on Wednesday, August 20.
Texas Tax‑Free Weekend: What Counts & How to Maximize It
August 8–10 window
Texas’s annual back‑to‑school sales tax holiday runs from Friday, August 8, through midnight Sunday, August 10, 2025. During this period, eligible purchases are exempt from both state and local sales taxes, which means a solid three‑day window for parents and students to stock up on back-to-school items without the added 6.25% state tax (or up to about 8.25% including local rates).
Eligible vs excluded items
Qualifying items include most clothing, footwear, backpacks, and specific school supplies, provided each item costs under $100 (including delivery, handling, or shipping fees). There’s no limit on the number of eligible items you can buy.
Non‑qualifying items include anything priced at $100 or more, specialty athletic or protective gear (e.g. golf cleats, football pads), clothing rental or alterations, accessories like jewelry, handbags, purses, luggage, belt buckles, and non‑listed school items such as unspecified textbooks or software.
Online/mail order guidelines
Online purchases, catalog orders, mail orders or telephone sales count as long as the sale (payment) occurs between August 8 and 10, regardless of when items ship or arrive.
If payment is attempted during the window but declines and is resubmitted after midnight on August 10, it no longer qualifies.
Shipping, handling, and delivery charges are included in the item’s final price, so be sure the total stays under $100 per item to stay exempt
Local impact
Across Texas, families are saving an estimated $133.2 million in state and local sales taxes during the 2025 tax‑free weekend alone, which averages out to about 8 cents saved per $1 spent on qualifying goods. In other words, that’s nearly 8% back on clothing and school‑supply buys.

Money-Saving Tips & Shopping Strategy
Back-to-school shopping can sneak up on your budget fast—especially if you have more than one kid or a list that seems to grow longer by the minute. But with a little planning and smart timing, San Antonio parents can cut costs without cutting corners.
Here are some tried-and-true tips to make your school shopping smoother and more affordable:
-
Start with a home inventory.
Before you buy, check what you already have. Last year’s unused notebooks, extra pencils, or lightly worn uniforms might still be in great condition. -
Get the school supply list early.
Most districts release official lists online. Stick to what’s required to avoid overspending on unnecessary extras. -
Shop during the Texas tax-free weekend (August 8–10).
Maximize savings by planning big purchases like backpacks, shoes, and clothing during the state’s sales tax holiday. Just be sure each item is under $100 to qualify. -
Follow your favorite stores for real-time deals.
Many retailers post flash sales and coupons on their apps or social media. Signing up for texts or email alerts can unlock early access and extra discounts. -
Stack coupons with price-matching policies.
Stores like Walmart, Target, and Office Depot often match competitor prices and some allow you to combine this with digital coupons or rewards programs. -
Consider buying in bulk (then splitting with other parents).
Multi-packs of folders, glue, or markers are cheaper per unit. Team up with a friend or neighbor and split the cost. -
Prioritize essentials and delay non-urgent buys.
Some supplies (like tissues or headphones) may not be needed right away. Focus on core items for day one, then revisit the rest during end-of-season clearance sales. -
Set a budget and involve your kids.
Giving your child a spending limit for clothes or supplies can teach budgeting skills—and reduce unexpected splurges in the aisles.
Back to School FAQs for San Antonio Parents
- When is the best time to shop for back-to-school deals in San Antonio?
The biggest deals typically roll out from late July through mid-August, with the peak happening during Texas’s tax-free weekend (August 8–10, 2025). However, some retailers start markdowns as early as late June. - Do stores in San Antonio price match during back-to-school season?
Yes. Major retailers like Walmart, Target, and Office Depot offer price-matching policies. Just bring proof (like a flyer or app screenshot) and check their terms. Some only match local competitors or online stores. - Are school supplies cheaper in-store or online?
It depends. In-store shopping lets you grab doorbusters and clearance items, while online retailers may offer digital-only discounts or bundles. Many families do a mix of both for the best overall savings. - Can I use coupons during the tax-free weekend?
Yes, you can combine store coupons, manufacturer coupons, and loyalty discounts during the tax-free holiday, as long as the item remains under the $100 threshold (including after discounts and shipping, if buying online). - Where can I find free or discounted school supplies in San Antonio?
Programs like Communities In Schools’ Stuff The Bus, San Antonio ISD back-to-school events, and various nonprofits host supply giveaways throughout August. Local libraries, churches, and community centers also participate. - Are school uniforms included in back-to-school deals?
Yes. Many stores like Target, Old Navy, Walmart, and local uniform shops offer seasonal sales on required dress code items. Uniforms also qualify for tax exemption during the tax-free weekend if each item is under $100. - What if I buy something now and it goes on sale later?
Some stores offer price adjustments if an item you bought goes on sale within a certain window (typically 7–14 days). Keep your receipts and check each store’s policy. - Is it better to buy backpacks and shoes early or wait for clearance?
Popular styles and sizes tend to sell out early, especially for backpacks and kids’ shoes. Buy early if you need something specific; shop clearance in late August for extras or backup pairs. - Can I return or exchange tax-free purchases later?
Yes, normal return policies apply. However, if you exchange an item after the tax-free weekend, the replacement item may be taxed if it’s over the $100 limit or no longer qualifies. - Do local San Antonio malls or outlet stores offer extra back-to-school events or savings?
Yes. Malls like North Star Mall, Ingram Park Mall, and The Rim often host special shopping weekends with entertainment, extra coupons, or giveaways. Outlet malls in San Marcos and Round Rock also run seasonal promotions perfect for back-to-school wardrobes.
