About the Witte Museum
The Witte Museum is named after San Antonio businessman Alfred G. Witte who in 1925 left the city $65,000 to build a museum of art, science, and natural history. The museum opened in 1926 and soon after began supporting archaeological research in the southwest Texas area. Many of the artifacts in the museum’s collections were found on these expeditions. Today, the museum holds one of the world’s largest collections of Texas history, ranging from dinosaur bones and cave drawings created by ancient humans to photographs, textiles, and art from more modern Texas history.
