The Parade of Lanterns is held on the San Antonio River Walk in February to mark the Chinese New Year. However, this year, the parade was postponed to August because of the pandemic. Now it will be held from August 27 to August 29 from 8 PM to 10 PM, and then from September 3 to September 5 from 8 PM to 10 PM. The parade features 26-ft long boats filled with large illuminated lanterns floating throughout the downtown section of the River Walk. The event is free and will be held at the given timings, weather conditions permitting.

The parade begins from the International Center (203 S. St. Mary’s Street). The eight floats will do two laps throughout the downtown area and stay together. A Go Rio tour boat may get in.
The parade can be best enjoyed from a restaurant patio. You may want to do so with dinner and drinks. Ensure that you notify your restaurant about your preferred seat near the river to enjoy the view of the parade. This year, the parade will only happen on weekend evenings. The floats won’t go in the Shops at Rivercenter or into the Convention Center lagoons on the weekends due to heavy traffic.
Important Things to Remember
The parade event depends on the weather conditions. The organizers shall post notices on social media and the event page in case the parade is not going to happen. Additionally, boat routes can change anytime, as a quick response to changing weather conditions.
