Then at 8:30 PM, the Krystal High Heel Race takes over The Strip in one of San Antonio Pride’s most chaotic, beloved, and very San Antonio moments.

Know Before You Go
The heart of San Antonio Pride is in Tobin Hill and The Strip on North Main Avenue, the city’s officially designated Pride Cultural Heritage District.
This is where you’ll find Crockett Park (the festival hub), the Night Parade route, the Block Party, and the highest concentration of LGBTQ+ bars in the city, including Pegasus, Sparky’s Pub, Heat, Knockout, SA Country Saloon, and the Bonham Exchange.
The River Walk hosts its own separate Pride celebration (the 5th Annual Pride River Parade happened May 30), but the main Pride weekend action is on The Strip, not downtown.
Getting There
If you’re coming from the suburbs, most of the surrounding communities are a quick highway drive from Tobin Hill:
- Schertz / Helotes: ~25 minutes via I-35 or Loop 1604
- Boerne / New Braunfels: ~35 minutes via I-10 or I-35
Parking near Crockett Park is extremely limited on Pride Saturday, and street closures along the parade route make driving stressful after 7 PM. Your best options:
- Rideshare: The easiest way in and out, especially for the Night Parade. Set your drop-off for the Crockett Park area and expect surge pricing after midnight. When leaving, walk a few blocks south toward downtown before requesting a ride.
- VIA bus: San Antonio’s public transit runs routes through the Tobin Hill area. Check viainfo.net for schedules and Park & Ride options ($2.60 round-trip).
- Driving: If you must drive, arrive before noon for the festival and park in a nearby city garage. San Antonio’s city parking garages typically run flat event rates of $15 or less. Check sapark.sanantonio.gov for locations and availability.
What to Know About the Festival
A few policies and practical details for the Pride Bigger Than Texas Festival at Crockett Park:
- Ages: 12 and up require a ticket. Children 11 and under get in free.
- Alcohol: You’ll need a valid 21+ ID at the gate to purchase drinks inside the festival.
- Pets: Leashed pets are allowed on the park grounds, but no exceptions. And Pride San Antonio warns that sidewalks, streets, and grass will be hot. Bring water for your pet and protect their paws. No veterinary care is available on-site.
- Food and drinks: Available for purchase from vendors inside the festival. Outside food and beverages aren’t mentioned in the policies, so plan to buy on-site.
- Heat prep: It’s late June in San Antonio. Bring sunscreen, a refillable water bottle, a hat, and a portable fan. Shade inside Crockett Park is limited.
Don’t Miss the Pre-Parade Traditions
Before the Night Parade steps off at 9 PM, two events kick off on The Strip that are worth sticking around for:
- The Rainbow Dash — a one-mile fun run/walk open to all ages that sends runners down the parade route right before it closes to floats.
- The Krystal High Heel Race — one of San Antonio Pride’s most beloved traditions. Competitors race in heels down The Strip at 8:30 PM, drawing massive crowds and setting the energy for the parade. Get there early for a good viewing spot.
Insider Tip: The Night Parade route runs directly through the bar district. Every bar on The Strip is open and accessible from the parade route, so you can grab a drink at Sparky’s or Pegasus and watch from the sidewalk without giving up your spot.
Staying Overnight?
If you’re turning Pride weekend into a full trip, River Walk hotels are the best base.
The Strip is a 15–20 minute walk or a quick rideshare north from the River Walk district, and you’ll have walkable access to restaurants, sightseeing, and after-hours spots downtown.
Expect to pay $120–200/night, a fraction of what coastal Pride destinations charge. Also, book 4–6 weeks in advance, as prices jump for Pride weekend.
