What happens when your family’s Christmas light display gets so popular that neighborhood traffic has to shut down? The Johnson family decided to build something bigger.

After appearing on ABC’s The Great Christmas Light Fight, they took their computer-controlled home display and turned it into Lights Alive!, a mile-long drive-through show powered by more than 90 computers.

Every pixel-packed light dances to the soundtrack playing through your FM radio, so crank up the volume and enjoy the show from your car.

Your ticket also gets you into Winter Wonderland, where you can park and stretch your legs among a 50-foot programmable light tree, snow bubbles popping across the lawn every 15 minutes, and plenty of holiday activities.

Bring the kids for Santa visits, escape rooms, and ornament building, then grab gingerbread fudge or gourmet cotton candy before heading home.

A portion of every ticket also supports 1Hope for Kids, a San Antonio nonprofit focused on foster care that the family has backed since the beginning.

The Light Park opened this display in Selma in 2021, and that tunnel remains the centerpiece of its mile-long holiday show.

THE JONES CHRISTmas RANCH

Four million Christmas lights spread across a mile-long drive on a 32-acre former private school campus? That’s what Mike and Mandy Jones built after their home display in Boerne outgrew the neighborhood.

The couple spent 19 years decorating their house before appearing on ABC’s The Great Christmas Light Fight in 2019.

When the crowds became too much for their street, they sold their forever home, bought the property off I-10, and moved the entire operation. Now, the former school gymnasium even doubles as a nonprofit event space.

Tune your radio to 94.5 FM as you drive through, and you’ll hear worship music accompanying the lights. The Joneses are upfront about their faith: this is a Christmas experience centered on Jesus being the reason for the season.

On select nights, you can park and head inside for an indoor Christmas market, with Santa visits, hot cocoa, and cookie decorating giving you a chance to enjoy the festivities beyond your car.

The ranch also puts its Christmas earnings toward the community. Ten percent of every dollar goes to Shine Bright Ministries, the nonprofit Mike and Mandy operate on the property.

This season, they’re planning 15 private Christmas celebrations for local shelters, serving around 700 children, while also distributing more than 1,500 free passes each year to foster families and children in crisis.

When: November 7 – December 31, 2026 | Sunday – Thursday: 6 pm – 10 pm | Friday – Saturday: 6 pm – 11 pm
Where: 43360 Interstate 10 W Frontage Rd, Boerne, TX 78006
How Much: $40 per vehicle

Free Drive Thru Lights SA & Neighborhood Christmas Light Displays

CITY OF WINDCREST LIGHT-UP

Windcrest’s Christmas lights started as a real estate sales trick, and somehow became one of San Antonio’s most beloved holiday traditions.

Back in the late 1950s, Barbee Winn was trying to sell homes in a development so far outside the city that local banks wouldn’t even finance them. Her solution? Hand out Christmas lights to residents and invite people to drive out and see the neighborhood. Maybe they’d fall in love with a house while they were there.

It worked, and Windcrest has been lighting up ever since. Today, this tiny 2.2-square-mile city draws more than 250,000 visitors a year for its annual Light-Up.

The trick to enjoying Windcrest is getting your hands on its official Light-Up map. Available at City Hall or online for a small donation, it marks the homes competing in the annual decorating contest, including some of the neighborhood’s most elaborate displays.

Follow it to cul-de-sacs packed with lights, multimedia setups, and houses competing for awards like Best Use of Inflatables and Best Homemade Decor.

You can absolutely wander around on your own, but the map makes it much easier to find the displays homeowners have gone all-out to create.

When: November 12 – December 31, 2026 | Daily 6 pm onward
Where: Windcrest, TX

Know Before You Go: Planning Your San Antonio Christmas Light Drive

A Christmas light drive is easy enough to plan, but a few details can save you from sitting in the wrong lane, getting turned away at the entrance, or arriving just as the longest queues of the season start building.

  • Check the drive before choosing a destination. Some displays are inside San Antonio, while others require a trip toward New Braunfels, Selma, or Boerne. Check the route from your actual starting point before committing to an evening, especially if you’re planning to visit more than one attraction.
  • Check your vehicle’s size before buying tickets. Commercial shows have restrictions that matter if you’re driving a lifted truck, van, or oversized vehicle. Lights Alive! allows vehicles up to 7 feet 10 inches tall, while Santa’s Ranch has an 8-foot height and 30-foot length limit.
  • Follow the headlights and traffic instructions at the entrance. Some displays ask drivers to switch off headlights or use parking lights so beams don’t wash out the decorations for everyone ahead. Follow the attendants’ directions, leave enough space between vehicles, and don’t stop or get out of the car on the active display route unless staff specifically directs you to.
  • Give yourself room for a queue. Saturday nights and the weeks closest to Christmas are usually the busiest. Arriving early can help, but check the attraction’s opening time and allow extra time for traffic approaching the entrance.
  • Use the correct entrance lane. Santa’s Ranch specifically asks visitors to stay in the right-hand frontage-road lane and not cut into the queue. Follow its directions from I-35 rather than relying on a last-minute turn across traffic.

Common Questions About Drive Through Christmas Lights in San Antonio

Where can I see Christmas lights in San Antonio for free?

The City of Windcrest Light-Up is your best bet for a free neighborhood Christmas lights drive. Residents decorate their homes, lawns, and streets with everything from elaborate homemade displays to animated light shows, and you can cruise through the neighborhood without paying admission.

Pick up the official Light-Up map to locate homes participating in the decorating contest. The map is available through the city for a donation benefiting local organizations.

What neighborhood has the best Christmas lights in San Antonio?

Windcrest is the standout for an organized neighborhood-wide Christmas lights outing. Its annual Light-Up contest gives you a map of participating homes, making it easier to find the streets and displays worth spending extra time on.

Deerfield, Monte Vista, and Alamo Heights are also worth exploring for residential Christmas decorations, although displays vary from house to house and aren’t part of the same official citywide contest.

Is Lights Alive! worth it?

Lights Alive! makes more sense when you plan to enjoy both parts of the attraction. First, you drive through its mile-long musical light show, then park and head into Winter Wonderland to explore the 50-foot programmable tree, take photos, enjoy holiday activities, and grab something sweet.

If you’re bringing children, that second part allows them to get out of the car and burn off some excitement after the drive. Just remember that some activities or food may have additional charges.

Can I bring pets along for drive-through light displays?

Generally, your pet can enjoy the lights from inside your own vehicle at attractions that permit animals. Lights Alive! explicitly welcomes dogs during its drive-through, although only certified service animals may enter its Winter Wonderland area. Santa’s Ranch also allows pets in vehicles and even offers treats at its concession stand.

For The Light Park and The Jones Christmas Ranch, check their current animal policies before heading out rather than assuming every attraction has the same rules. Keep pets secured inside your vehicle throughout the drive and never let them out along the display route.
