OUTDOOR FUN – SPRING BREAK THINGS TO DO IN SAN ANTONIO

San Antonio Parks
Visit some of San Antonio’s best parks and greenways this Spring Break. And, use the San Antonio Parks and Recreation Department’s cool Find a Park tool to be sure the park you’re going to visit has the amenities you need. And, don’t miss one of San Antonio’s coolest parks: Yanaguana Garden at Hemisfair Park (it has a splash pad!)

Stars and Stripes Drive-in Theater 
Head up IH-35 North a bit to New Braunfels for a drive-in movie, double feature experience. Tickets to double features of first-run movies are just $8 per person (aged 12 and up), $5 children ( 4-11), and kids three and under are free. Ask for the Military or First Responder discount, too, with valid ID. For the full experience, arrive at least 1 hour before showtime to grab dinner from the 50s Cafe, enjoy the covered patio, and let the kids play on the playground.

Ride the San Antonio Eagle Zoo Train
This historic train, formerly the Breckenridge Eagle, starts near the Zoo and makes stops at the Witte Museum, Kiddie Park, and the Japanese Tea Gardens, also known as the Sunken Gardens. Open daily from 9:00 a.m. (weather permitting), the ride is $4 for ages three and up. Free for anyone under three.

Stroll through the Japanese Tea Gardens
Free to visit, this hidden gem delights with pleasing views, lush greenery and brightly colored flowers and Koi ponds. Stay for lunch at the Jingu House, open daily from 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.

Morgan’s Wonderland
This one-of-a-kind theme park, built for individuals with special needs, is open during Spring Break. There are more than 25 attractions such as rides, playgrounds and other fun elements, including a colorful, five-and-a-half-story-high Ferris wheel, Whirling Wonder. Plus, Morgan’s Wonderland has added lots of special, daily events, entertainment, and activities this year!

Natural Bridge Wildlife Ranch
Some fondly call it the “drive-thru” zoo but Natural Wildlife Ranch is so much more. Our previous post about the Ranch explains why this is one stop on your Spring Break list you just can’t miss. Admission can be pricey but you can drive through the park as many times as you like- just don’t leave unless you’re ready to pay admission prices again.

Natural Bridge Caverns Canopy Challenge and Zip Lines
Do you have what it takes to conquer the ropes course at Natural Bridge Caverns? This awe-inspiring ropes course and zip line, fun for adults and older kids, also offers a Canopy Kids Course for kids under 48 inches tall that’s great for kids under 6.

Kiddie Park (Broadway)
America’s oldest children’s amusement park, Kiddie Park, is well cared for and full of fantastic rides for little ones (up to about age 10) as well as classic carnival games. They are open from Monday– Sunday, from 9:00 a.m. – 7:00 p.m. during Spring Break. The San Antonio Zoo Eagle Train now stops at Kiddie Park!

Visit The Alamo 
San Antonio’s most recognized historic landmark, The Alamo is free to visit and it’s open every day from 9:00 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Visit the San Antonio Missions
In 2015, the San Antonio Missions were designated as a World Heritage Site – a huge honor as it’s the only one in the state of Texas! They’re also free to visit and there are four of them (not counting the Alamo): Mission Concepción, Mission San José, Mission San Juan, and Mission Espada. Built in the 1700s, these missions are still active Catholic parishes today.

Ride a boat down the San Antonio River
Take a boat tour in downtown San Antonio to learn about the rich and colorful history of the Alamo City and the San Antonio River. They’re having special tours for Spring Break!  Open daily from 9:00 a.m. Price varies.

See San Antonio’s full history on the side of a cathedral
Every Tuesday, Friday, Saturday, Sunday, three times a night (Tuesday: 7:30pm, 8:00pm, 8:30pm; Friday: 9:00pm, 9:30pm, 10:00pm; Saturday: 9:00pm, 9:30pm, 10:00pm; Sunday: 7:30pm, 8:00pm, 8:30pm), a unique video art installation plays on the front of the San Fernando Cathedral. San Antonio | The Saga is like nothing you’ve ever seen before. Get there early to get a bite to eat from a food truck, then sit back and enjoy this audio visual history lesson that’ll knock your socks off.

Visit El Mercado
Few places in town will give you the full experience of the color, culture, sights, sounds, and creativity of San Antonio like Market Square. Dine at the world-famous Mi Tierra, or visit more than 100 locally owned shops. There’s always a party atmosphere at El Mercado.

Operating daily from 8:40 a.m. to 5:30 p.m., these bright red, double-decker buses provide tours of downtown San Antonio with off-and-on-again stops at favorite destinations all over downtown. Hop on, ride to your next spot, hop off, and then hop on again to find your next adventure.

Take a downtown San Antonio ghost tour – if you dare!
Not for the faint-of-heart, San Antonio Ghost Tours offer a ghoulishly good time. Outfitted with latest ghost hunting equipment, you’ll be ready for whatever lurks in the dark corners of historic (and sometimes creepy!) downtown San Antonio.

Visit The Historic Pearl
Formerly a brewery, The Historic Pearl is where you can now find or a cup of San Antonio’s best javapastries to die forsome of the hottest restaurants in town, a wide variety of shopsone of the best hotels on the planet, and San Antonio’s largest Farmer’s Market on Saturday mornings. Then walk from there down the Museum Reach along the San Antonio River, to the San Antonio Museum of Art or, further down to the stretch of where more fantastic restaurants and shops line the River Walk, beckoning you to stay a while. See a real rodeo at Tejas Rodeo
Located just outside of San Antonio, in Bulverde, Texas, Tejas Rodeo provides an authentic rodeo experience. Family-friendly rodeos take place every Saturday night during March with the doors opening at 5:00 p.m. and the rodeo starting at 7:30 p.m. Onsite dining is available both before and after the rodeo.

It’s just $3 admission per person, $3 skate rental per person, and $3 for one hot dog with a soda.

The Ice and Golf Center Northwoods

Created with family fun in mind, Dave and Busters in downtown San Antonio brings together the perfect mix of elements needed to please everyone in the family. Kids love the variety of exciting games and the ability to earn prizes. Test your mental and physical skills at Extreme Escape
Extreme Escape provides a unique, challenging, interactive experience for groups. Players gather in a deeply immersive, themed room, and have one hour to use their mental and physical abilities to find and apply clues in order to solve a real-life puzzle and escape from the room before the clock runs out. It’s like stepping into a live video game! Players of all ages are welcome. Visit San Antonio Museums during their free days and times
Nearly all San Antonio museums offer free days and times to visit. Take advantage of them and bring the whole family!

Learn about the Old West and Cowboys at the Briscoe Western Art Museum
Kids (12 and under) and active-duty military members and their family (up to 4 people) are always free at the Briscoe and adults are just $10 each. The Briscoe is always free to visit on Tuesday evenings from 4:00 p.m. – 9:00 p.m. Kids love the Briscoe and the mystery surrounding the days of stage coaches, old guns, riding on horseback, and epic battles.

Take flight at one of these indoor trampoline parks
Trampoline parks are a great way to burn off the sillies indoors. Many parks suggest making reservations (and buy your pass) ahead of time to avoid long waits and most charge by the hour.
