Free Family Events in San Antonio this Weekend

Tween Club

Kids ages 10 to 14 will have a blast at the Mammen Public Library! Every week, they’ll have something fun to do, like crafts, games, book club, and baking. 

This week they are hosting an Adventures in Storytelling game, the perfect way for your Tween to unwind after their first (very cold) week back at school.

Get your family’s thinking caps on and spend the day in friendly competition. The MLK Knowledge Quest: A Family Challenge will have plenty of brain-teasing challenges! Whether you just know the basics of Dr. King’s life or you can recite his “I Have a Dream” speech in your sleep, you’re sure to learn something new.

This part of San Antonio DreamWeek honors and celebrates the legacy of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr.

Storytime on the Children’s Stage – Ursula Upside Down

Kids will enjoy a fun storytime at Barnes & Noble at La Cantera.

Today, they will follow Ursula, a happy catfish swimming through the river. But does she know which way is up, down, left, and right? Listen to her story to find out!

If you didn’t know, the La Cantera Barnes & Noble has Storytime on the Children’s Stage every Saturday at 11 a.m. Most of the B&N stores in San Antonio also have weekly storytimes, so check with the store closest to you to see what their event calendar looks like. My kids always love the animated readings and the cute on-theme crafts they have afterwards.

MLK Wreath-Laying Ceremony

Join the community in honoring Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.’s life, accomplishments, and struggles. City officials, organizations, and businesses will lay wreaths at the foot of his statue in commemoration.

This wreath-laying ceremony is part of San Antonio’s 38th Annual MLK Day March and Celebration, and it’s a great way to help kids understand the somber nature of MLK day and the lasting ripples one person’s life can have.

Relive one of the greatest movies of all time as it hits the stage! Andrew Lloyd Webber’s School of Rock is coming to San Antonio! Based on the hit movie, this musical follows Dewey Finn as he tries to turn his life around while turning a class of straight-A students into an epic rock band.

This production may not have a sly cameo by Jack Black, but plenty of the cast are notorious stars of the 210. Returning from SABT’s Rock of Ages is Tanner Berry (as Dewey Finn), and Alexis Semevolos-Velzquez is back after taking to the stage in Cabaret, Rent, and Rock of Ages. Even better – this production has 13 new prodigies from the area ready to claim their fame with LIVE performances.

This event is sure to be more fun than the typical panic that sets in with snowy weather in San Antonio, and it may be exactly what your kiddos need before the frozen week on the horizon.

From a 28-ton snow pit to frosty science demonstrations, you can easily fill your Saturday afternoon. Make sure you dress for the occasions (mittens recommended!) and you can check out the full list of their games and activities on their page.

With the help of Garden educators, you’ll create your micro-green sculpture with moldable clay and chia seeds. You’ll also learn about the unique qualities these tiny seeds have that make them so easy to grow.
 
At the end of the class, you’ll have a cute creation to take home.

Hear ye! Hear ye! Come to the Kerrville Ren Faire and be delighted with great entertainment, handmade crafts, fantastic food, and plenty of fun and games!

While it may be a smaller Ren Faire, there are plenty of activities, performances, and opportunities to shop and spend your day. Some prefer the micro-dose of festivities, while others consider it a “warm up” for larger faires like Sherwood.
