Texas was the first state to designate Juneteenth as a holiday. Juneteenth is about the celebration of freedom and also the remembrance of those who were enslaved. This weekend, and on 19 June, San Antonio will have several events to commemorate this holiday. If you’re looking to become more educated or would like to partake in a celebration, see which event is near you.

 

2021 Juneteenth Events in San Antonio

The Future is Freedom: Juneteenth Celebration

Head down to Hopscotch and learn all about the grassroots efforts that continue to make progress towards freedom. Live music, vendors, and more entertainment will be present. While you’re celebrating, it’s good to know that funds go to help The TX Heat Wave Project and Corazon San Antonio.

Juneteenth Festival

This Fiesta event is all about celebrating Juneteenth with the community. There are two free concerts, a flotilla fish fry, and more. Don’t miss out on this educational event with a hint of Fiesta.

Movie Discussion: Walk On the River

Take a load off and view Walk on the River: A Black History of the Alamo City right at the Alamo. Before the viewing, there will be a short discussion lead by special speakers who put this event together. Feel free to bring drinks and snacks.

Juneteenth Pop-Up Shop

Stop by this pop-up to contribute to the growth of the African community. Many cultural goods and accessories will be for purchase. Starting at 12:30 p.m. there will be live African drumming followed by reading for children. Make sure to bring a mask to this event!

Juneteenth Block Party 

Head down to the Alamo Beer company and celebrate Juneteenth. Juneteenth celebrates the freedom and heritage of the African American community. Along with vendors, there will be community discussion on resources within the community!

Juneteenth Missions Baseball Game 

Gather the squad and head to watch the SA Missions play the NW Arkansas Naturals. This event is a fundraiser to benefit the Texas Kidney Foundation. VIP tickets include a meet and greet all-you-can-eat-buffet, and more. Fireworks will be fired at the end!

Juneteenth at Legacy Park by the Art of Four

Join in on this celebration that features local artists and talent. Each scheduled entertainment will represent the past, present, and future of Juneteenth.

Understanding Juneteenth

Don’t have the chance to get out? Well, hop online for a virtual Juneteenth presentation and celebration. This experience will have a discussion on the history of the holiday and feature a Q and A regarding issues in the community and how you can help!

Juneteenth Fiesta with Poet Laureate Andrea ‘Vocab’ Sanderson

Head downtown to listen to some original poetry. This San Antonio poet will express emotions about Juneteenth alongside a live jazz band. Food and drinks will be available.

19th Annual Juneteenth Golf Tournament

This golf tournament raises money for the Juneteenth San Antonio organization! So get ready to putt, or just watch if you don’t have that good of aim. Food and drinks will be available.
