Juneteenth is almost here, and San Antonio has a packed calendar to prove it. The city’s celebrations stretch across neighborhoods and weekends, with everything from block parties and live music to museum exhibits and community cookouts.

San Antonio sits just 200 miles from Galveston, where Union soldiers announced the end of slavery on June 19, 1865, and the city’s Juneteenth traditions reflect that proximity.

This guide rounds up the best Juneteenth events in San Antonio for 2026, with details on dates, locations, costs, and what to know before you go.

Know Before You Go

Most Juneteenth events in San Antonio center around the city’s historic East Side and downtown, especially Comanche Park and St. Paul Square.

If you’re coming in from Stone Oak, Alamo Heights, Boerne, or Converse, plan for a 20- to 35-minute drive via I-35 or US-281 under normal conditions. On parade day (Saturday, June 20), expect heavier traffic near the East Side.

Getting to the Juneteenth Parade

The parade starts at 9:00 AM at Sam Houston High School (4635 E. Houston St.) and ends at Comanche Park #2 (2600 Rigsby Ave.). Street parking fills up fast along the route, and nearby neighborhood roads get congested early.

Beat the Heat

San Antonio in June averages highs of 90–94°F with high humidity. Most Juneteenth events are outdoors, so plan accordingly.

About Comanche Park

Comanche Park #2 has been the home of San Antonio’s official Juneteenth Festival for over 20 years (the tradition started at the Freeman Coliseum back in 1996). The park is the hub for the main festival, so expect it to be the most crowded venue of the weekend. Admission to the festival is free.

San Antonio’s Juneteenth History

San Antonio has celebrated Juneteenth since 1866, just one year after the original announcement in Galveston. That makes the city’s traditions among the oldest continuous Juneteenth observances in Texas. The events you’re attending aren’t new. They’re part of a 160-year-old legacy.

Common Questions About Juneteenth Events in San Antonio

Are these events kid-friendly?

Most of them are. The Comanche Park festival and St. Paul Square block parties typically feature kids’ zones with bounce houses, face painting, free food, and educational tables.

Museum events often include hands-on activities for younger children. Check individual event pages for age-specific details. Evening concerts and late-night events may skew older.

Where should I park for the Juneteenth Parade?

Your best bet is arriving at least 45 minutes before the 9:00 AM start and parking along the neighborhood streets near Sam Houston High School (the starting point).

Parking near Comanche Park (the endpoint) is tighter and gets claimed early by festival vendors and volunteers.

If street parking is full, look for paid lots in the surrounding area or take VIA transit.

Will city offices be open on June 19?

No. San Antonio City Hall, municipal offices, and public libraries close on Thursday, June 19 for the federal Juneteenth holiday. Public safety and emergency services stay operational.

For trash collection, Juneteenth doesn’t typically trigger a schedule delay, but check the city’s My Collection Day page or call 3-1-1 to confirm your pickup day.

Is the parade on June 19 or June 20?

The federal holiday is Thursday, June 19, but the parade and main festival are on Saturday, June 20. Many events run across both days and the surrounding weekends, so check each listing for its specific date.

Can I take public transit to the events?

Yes. VIA Metropolitan Transit serves the East Side with multiple bus routes. A single ride costs $1.30, and transfers are free.

The VIVA cultural routes are useful if you’re connecting from downtown. Download the VIA goMobile app to plan routes and buy passes. It’s easier than hunting for exact change on the bus.
