Visiting 20 San Antonio parks in one year seems like an easy goal, right? Let me assure y’all, it’s not as easy as I assumed. This little thing called “life” got in our way and it slurped up our weekends faster than a thirsty toddler with a cup of juice and a bendy straw. The next time I looked up, it was mid-December and we still have two parks to visit to reach our once-seemingly-easy goal (We’ve been to 18 parks so far but I’ve only written about 16 as of this post. Stay tuned, more park posts to come this month!). Never fear: we WILL visit 20 parks in 2014 and reach our #SA2020Resolutions goal by December 31.
Park #16 on our list is Brackenridge Park which, in its nearly 350 acres, offers something for everyone.
Adults, kids, dogs, ducks, deer, birds, and the occasional motorcycle and classic car flock to this park for outdoor frolicking.
Our family’s favorite spot in Brackenridge Park is the area around the Joske Pavilion. We feed the ducks, play on the playground, eat picnic lunches, and stroll along the San Antonio River.
Brackenridge also offers two additional pavilions; lots of riverside spots for quiet reflection, picnics, or parties; trails for walking or biking; a softball field; restrooms; and access to the Japanese Tea Garden, San Antonio Zoo, and Sunken Garden Theatre. And, at Brackenridge Park, you can catch the San Antonio Zoo train, which is $3.50 for adults and kids three years of age and older (kids under three are free). The train loops around the park, with stops at the Witte Museum, Kiddie Park, and the Japanese Tea Gardens / Sunken Gardens.
Templeton, AKA Parkaholic, thought the ducks would be feeding him, instead of the other way around. Silly boy. It’s a good thing we’ve got a strong leash.
For locals and for visitors to San Antonio, spending some outdoorsy time at Brackenridge Park isn’t just a treat. It’s an Alamo City tradition.
Check out all of the San Antonio parks we’ve visited this year as part of our #SA2020Resolutions.

Love this! I have so many childhood memories of Brackenridge Park. I got to take my boys there for the first time recently and they loved it, too.
Jill, I’m so glad you had a great time. I have wonderful memories of Brackenridge Park too.
Thank you for this post! Where in the park can you catch the San Antonio Zoo Eagle (train)? I would love to take my 14 month-old but wouldn’t know where to begin!
You can catch the Zoo train right across the street from the Zoo’s entrance. Here is more info: http://www.sazoo-aq.org/attractions/zoo-train/
This is most definitely my favorite park of SA. It can get a little loud on some weekends and forget about it on a holiday weekend but most visits are great. Bonus note right out side the park is a great paleta ( Mexican popsicles) place called SA Pops.
