Y’all, the San Antonio Book Festival was breathtaking. It was the Fiesta of books. It was a reader’s paradise, a writer’s playground, and a child’s vivid dream prancing boldly around words and into billowing tents and amidst the vivid colors of the San Antonio Library splashed against the backdrop of an unseasonably gray spring sky. And I say this after only attending the kids’ activities. But they were so good! My kids, usually ready to leave an event within an hour of arriving, had to be pulled away after three. We listened to inspiring authors, crafted and created, wove words into poetry, built forts with cloth and clothespins, bought books, borrowed books, and ate french fries with wild abandon under a papel picado banner at 10:30 in the morning.
However, next year, I need a better plan. On Saturday, it was just me and the kids, so we stuck to the children’s area. But I desperately wanted to immerse myself in some of the other sessions and events. Instead, I gazed enviously into rooms filled with erudite readers and writers having what looked like fascinating discussions while I floated right past each one, following my children to wherever their whimsy took us next. In 2015, I’ll plan it so the kids get their time at the festival but I’ll get mine too.
