The University of Texas at San Antonio plans to offer free tuition to hundreds of students beginning in 2021. UTSA free tuition program was recently announced on Wednesday. UTSA’s free tuition program plans to offer full-tuition packages to high school seniors within San Antonio ISD that rank within the top 50% of their graduating class.

UTSA Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs Kimberly Andrews Espy told UTSA Today “There are so many talented students right here in San Antonio who dream of earning their degrees but do not have the financial means to do so. This important partnership with SAISD will help us better reach these hard-working students, particularly students in low-income and first-generation families, and provide them with the opportunity to earn their degrees and launch their careers.”

This is not the first time that UTSA has launched a program to support lower-income students or those who are first-generation college students who obtain a degree without the stress of finances. Last year, UTSA launched the Bold Promise Program. This particular program offered free tuition to high school seniors who ranked in the top 25% of their graduating class and met certain family income level criteria.

As UTSA rolls out its new program with its partners at SAISD, both the university and the San Antonio school district are hopeful that dissolving financial barriers for talented students to enter college will increase their desire to work hard in high school and prepare themselves for education at the collegiate level.

The importance of quality education and yet the difficult financial barriers that exclude many talented San Antonio residents from obtaining one is not lost on educators in San Antonio. Hopefully, this new program will strengthen the number of motivated students. UTSA estimates that around 200 students will take advantage of the program yearly. UTSA free tuition program will begin in 2021.
