A San Antonio Staycation at the JW Marriott Resort

A staycation is like a huge, rich, slice of chocolate cake. You don’t indulge yourself with one every day but, when you do splurge, you want the experience to be worth it.

My family and I were recently invited to experience a summer staycation at the JW Marriott San Antonio Hill Country Resort and Spa complete with a one-night stay, dinner at 18 Oaks for Roger and me, a superhero Kids’ Night Out for Delaney and Waylon, and breakfast at Cibolo Moon. If you’ve ever stayed at the JW Marriott in San Antonio, you know that their superior customer service combined with luxurious accommodations, a variety of family-fun activities, and great food make for one heck of an experience. But, if you’ve never been before, take a quick, one-minute look at what’s waiting for you and your family this summer just up the road, outside of Loop 1604. Paradise is closer than you think.

Here are my top reasons your next staycation should be at the JW Marriott:

The Range Riders Kids’ Club
You love your kids. Heck, you took them on a staycation with you. But that doesn’t mean you couldn’t use a break to reconnect with your significant other or maybe even sit by the pool, reading a (grown up) book all by yourself with NO interruptions. The JW Marriott not only makes this possible, they make it convenient, and fun for everyone.

During the summer, they’re offering Kids Night Out every single night. Each evening features a different theme (Space Adventure, Sports Night, Hollywood Night, Sweet Candy Kids, Under the Sea, Wild West, and Super Heroes) for kids, ages 4-12, and includes activities, games, crafts, a movie, and dinner. And, if you prefer a little time to yourself during the day instead, your kids will love special events at the Kids’ Club including The Making of a Prima Ballerina (kids receive a tutu, tiara, wand, and ballet slipper socks and enjoy instruction from San Antonio Metropolitan Ballet Company’s choreographer Karin Connolly) and Inside the Actors Studio (kids gain confidence while let their imaginations run wild in this theatrical session).

The Food
What staycation is complete without pampering your tastebuds too? Our visit to 18 Oaks revealed a beautiful yet casually comfortable dining experience with a menu rivaling any steakhouse in town. The pillowy, European-style bread, the fresh oysters, the bone-in-ribyeye, the duck-fat french fries, the chocolate porter cake (THIS cake was the stuff dreams are made of – sadly it’s been retired from the menu to make way for a new chocolate cake), and the excellent attention to service from the staff made for one romantic and delicious evening. Roger and I can’t wait to go back.

While staying at the JW Marriott, we dined poolside, twice, at the Rivertop Grill and I had, hands-down, some of the best fish tacos ever. They were simple (mahi mahi grilled and topped with a creamy chipotle sauce and fresh cabbage, wrapped in a flour tortilla), but so tasty.

Breakfast at Cibolo Moon is a smorgasbord of every beloved breakfast and brunch item you can imagine. While Waylon was thrilled to eat Lucky Charms (a rare delicacy for him), I found myself drawn to the amazing array of pastries, made-to-order omelettes, cured meats, and fresh fruit. Breakfast at Cibolo Moon is the perfect way to fuel up for the not-so-arduous task of laying by the pool all day long.

The Activities
I could seriously live on a chaise lounge under an umbrella on the banks of the JW’s lazy river, sipping iced tea (or something a little stronger) while my kids play endlessly at the six-acre waterpark. For the much younger set, there’s a splash pad with mini-slides. Guests without kids will appreciate the adults-only pool that overlooks the picturesque golf course.

Nightly, complimentary s’mores are offered so you can make and devour them while watching the sun set over the gorgeous Texas Hill Country. And, this summer only, kids will have fun playing with and learning from a customized-just-for-the-JW-Marriott Little Passports activity. This special, complimentary activity for kids, ages 5-12, is an interactive journey through the geography, history, and points of interest throughout Texas.

Other popular resort activities include visits to the Lantana Spa (which I wrote about here last summer) and golf (did you know that kids play for free after 3 p.m.?). Of course, you can also take a more leisurely approach and simply sit in a rocking chair, admire the view, and enjoy life at a slower pace than the one you left back in San Antonio. It is, after all, your staycation.
