Quarantine got you feeling cooped up? Looking to get out and get a little wild? Well, there’s no place in the entire city wilder than the San Antonio Zoo. Due to COVID-19, the San Antonio Zoo closed its doors on March 20 and had temporarily allowed for drive-thru visits. Zoo officials have announced that the establishment is reopening.
From May 29-31, pass holders will be able to visit the zoo for a pass holder-only weekend. Then, on June 1, the zoo will open to the general public with standard admission tickets. However, be prepared for some changes to help diffuse the risk of viral transmission and spread.
First, tickets purchased will be timed for zoo admission. Annual pass holders and monthly members will need to make reservations online for a dedicated time slot to enter the zoo. Standard admission tickets will also need to be purchased online to reserve a date and time slot for entry. Annual pass holders who purchased their passes between March 2019 and March 2020 will get an additional three months added to their zoo membership as a thank you from the zoo.
Secondly, rides inside the zoo, including the carousel and the trail, will be closed until further guidance from state and local officials is received. San Antonio Zoo CEO Tim Morrow maintains that public safety is the primary concern moving forward with the reopening.
The zoo will be operating at a 25% capacity limit, and certain indoor areas of the zoo, like the birdhouse and aquarium, will remain closed. There will also be an increase in the availability of cleaning products, such as hand sanitizer, throughout the zoo.
“Our zoo crew has been working diligently on reopening plans almost since the day we closed. We will be implementing safety guidelines set forth by our Governor and City officials that will provide our guests with a safe visit back to the zoo,” Morrow stated.
The San Antonio Zoo has been ranked as one of the Top 10 Best Zoos for Kids and Families by Parents Magazine. It has also been listed as one of the best things to do in San Antonio with kids by SanAntonioThingsToDo.com. Whether you enjoy viewing the butterflies, reptiles, monkeys, or giraffes, you and your family are bound to find a taste of the wild that you have been craving!
Standard admission to the San Antonio Zoo is $17.50 for adults and $14.25 for kids 3-11. Kids under the age of 3 enter for free. Memberships start at $38 per person for one year.
