Top 3 Free Recommended Events for Families each week:
As a Zoo Troop blogger, our guest contributor Sara Phillips and her family receive free admission to the San Antonio Zoo and other perks and experiences throughout the year. While I have not yet downloaded and installed Pokémon Go on my phone, my husband and kids are enthralled with the game! They can’t catch ’em all fast enough and they play every chance they get. When I read that the San Antonio Zoo is hosting Pokemon Go events each Friday evening in August, I knew we had to see what it was all about.
The San Antonio Zoo offers special admission on these Pokémon Go nights! Just $7 admission gets all ages into the Zoo (valid 6-9 p.m., only, not valid with any other discounts or coupons). Zoo members get in free. There are also Happy Hour Specials at Longnecks Bar & Grill and Bistro. There are also more Pokémon located in Brackenridge Park and the Zoo will run the train during this event. Zoo admission is required to enter the event.
We attended the first event on August 5 and had a blast spending time together while catching as many Pokémon as we could, even with the temperature sitting right at 100 degrees. As with most events we attend, I was able to find ways to make the event work for us which is why I’m sharing these tips for your time at the Zoo.
Tips for a Great Time Catching ’em All at the San Antonio Zoo:
- Have a sufficient amount of PokeBalls before you arrive. There are plenty of stops to collect more but I think it’s less stressful if you already have them.
- Get there a little early to find a great parking spot.
- Ride the train first. The train line is shorter than the zoo entrance line. Plus, you can incubate eggs & collect PokeStops along the route. {Note: there is an additional fee of $3.50 per person to ride the train.}
- Pack a battery pack. It wouldn’t hurt to bring your patience and a sweat rag, too, though!
- Find the air conditioned buildings – Reptile House, Hippo House and the Beastro Restaurant – to break up your time in the August heat.
- Get creative with your photos and share them on social media with #SAZOOPokemonGo. You never know, it could earn you a prize which will be given away at the zoo entrance at 8:30 p.m. You must be present to win.
Have you attended Pokémon Go at the San Antonio Zoo? What tips do you have to share?
Although the San Antonio Zoo is very excited about the release of Pokémon Go, their top priority is the safety and wellbeing of their real-life animals and guests. The Zoo asks that you do not venture into off-limits areas to catch Pokémon. Additionally, please make sure to watch where you are, and walk, don’t run to your next Pokéstop.

Does zoo have wifi for pokemon events. My kids play with tablets that need wifi?
Hi Kerri! I wish I could say yes but they only have wifi access points at the front gate and at the Beastro.
