With the down pour of rain we’ve had recently, the grass is greener, the air smells cleaner, and the beautiful aromas of spring bombard our senses. Not to mention the sight of fireflies dancing about. This all means one thing: Get outdoors! Or, better yet, walk, drive or bike for a picnic in a park with your family.
And we have the perfect opportunity for you to pack up the kids, grab a blanket and a lawn chair or two to eat, drink and enjoy Mother Nature during a wonderful event, Baskets & Blankets, from 4 p.m. to 8 p.m. Sunday, May 1 at the Lambert Beach area of Brackenridge Park, all in celebration of Eva’s Heroes 10th anniversary. Since 2006, Eva’s Heroes, which was co-founded by Eva Longoria and Board President Christiane Perkins-Garcia, has enriched the lives of teens and young adults with intellectual special needs, and they invite you to celebrate their achievements.
Baskets & Blankets, which is presented by Community First Health Plans, features meal baskets from 15 popular restaurants, including Bread Box, Cured, Café Dijon, Green Vegetarian Cuisine, La Tuna, Magnolia Pancake Haus, Pam’s Patio Kitchen, Rudy’s BBQ, Smoke Shack, Southerleigh Fine Food and Brewery, Thai Topaz, Tim the Girl Catering and Top Golf, among other eateries.

Shawne Zakaria, Eva’s Heroes executive director, encourages moms to “bring a blanket and those you love for an afternoon of fun, dancing and fabulous food highlighting our city’s vibrant culinary community.”
Baskets & Blankets offers four tiers of picnic meals that can be purchased in advance online at www.evasheroes.org/baskets-and-blankets/ with a limited number of meals available for purchase onsite:
- Kids Meals for two – $20
- Standard Meals for two – $40
- Deluxe Meals for two – $60
- White Glove Service and Meals for two – $150
This family friendly fundraiser allows friends, couples and families to dine in Brackenridge Park while kids can enjoy games like wheelbarrow and sack races, horseshoes and volleyball. Then as the sun sets, moms and dads can enjoy an adult beverage and dance under the stars to live music by local artists Chacho and Brance, as well as Ed Morales.
Eva’s Heroes advocates for inclusiveness, and that means including you and your family, too, in their 10th anniversary celebration. So we hope to see you under blue skies at Brackenridge Park for Baskets & Blankets.
