2016 has been one of the busiest and most successful years so far for San Antonio Mom Blogs (Thanks to you, our wonderful readers!). One of the biggest benefits of our success includes the wonderful, caring people we meet and the partnerships we’ve formed in our community. One partnership which I’m particularly proud to be a part of is Let’s Play.
Early in 2016, the Dr Pepper Snapple Group asked me to become a Let’s Play Ambassador which allowed me to share, both on the Let’s Play website and on San Antonio Mom Blogs, about all of the ways my family plays together. But a big part of my participation in Let’s Play for 2016 was getting to witness and report on, firsthand, the incredible work Dr Pepper Snapple Group does across the country, building playgrounds and helping kids and communities stay fit, healthy and happy.
As you may remember, Let’s Play is an initiative by Dr Pepper Snapple Group (DPS) to provide kids and families with the tools, places and inspiration to make active play a daily priority. Through Let’s Play, DPS partners with the nonprofit organizations KaBOOM!, to build playgrounds in underserved communities around the U.S., Canada, Mexico and the Caribbean, and with Good Sports to provide grants for sports equipment. DPS launched Let’s Play back in 2011 and by 2017, the Let’s Play initiative will provide 10 million kids with more opportunities to play, including children right here in San Antonio.
In April of 2016, I attended a Let’s Play San Antonio Design Day where local kids and parents dreamed up a playground for their community. In June, I attended the Let’s Play San Antonio Build Day during which more than 300 volunteers made that playground dream a reality. In July, I went back to talk to those families using the playground to see how this brand new, safer, more colorful play area is making a difference in the lives of kids in the community.
Seeing so many eager volunteers come together on a hot, Texas summer day to build a playground created from the imaginations of kids, lifted my heart. Here’s a look at the hard work, sweat and excitement that went into creating this new playground on Build Day:
It was my pleasure and honor to be a part of this amazing project and to see it benefit families in San Antonio directly.
This December, on the Let’s Play site, I’m sharing “Five gift suggestions for kids that promote playtime,” where you’ll find some fun gift ideas for your kids. But I also encourage you to click around the Let’s Play site to see some of the fantastic playground builds that took place in 2016 in communities across the country. Dr Pepper Snapple and KaBoom! and their partners will continue to work to make our communities safer, healthier and happier in 2017.
