Let's Play San Antonio: the revival of a playground reconnects a community!

This post is sponsored by Let’s Play but all opinions are mine. Thank you for supporting the brands and initiatives that support San Antonio Mom Blogs!

Last month more than 300 volunteers came together to provide a San Antonio neighborhood with a brand new playground. Thanks to the efforts of Dr Pepper Snapple Group’s Let’s Play initiative and with help from partners, including KaBoom! and Prospera Housing, area kids saw their dream come true: the playground they’d designed themselves came to life!

One month after the incredible build day, how do the kids like their new park? Prospera Housing Service Manager Anahi Alvizo said she’s hearing from area residents frequently about how much they love the new playground.

“The kids now have more opportunities to play and they love to tell us how much better this new playground is than the old one. Before, I’d walk by the playground and, often, I wouldn’t see any kids out there. But now, the kids are out there playing. We see families meeting up and connecting with each other. And I think the kids and parents alike feel a special sense of ownership of this playground since they’ve been a part of this project from the very beginning.”

The children from this warm and welcoming community in San Antonio aren’t shy about giving their opinions.

I like everything (about it). We have a new park and we play every day.”
– Samuel, 11

Avery, who’s six, said she loves the monkey bars.

I like the spinning wheel. This playground is so much better. The last one was rusty.”
– King, 11

Savannah, who’s 11, also loves the spinning wheel. “This playground is just nicer and not rusty and old like the old one.”

Adrian, who’s 12, isn’t quite as excited about the new playground equipment as the younger kids are. He’s more interested in the park as a whole. “It’s nicer to hang out here than it used to be at the old one.”

I like the swinging bars because they’re challenging. This is the best playground we’ve ever had. There could never be a better playground than this!”
– Jayden, 9

Truly, the kids are most impressed by their inclusion in the creation, from start to finish, of their new playground.

I drew this and they built it!”
– Savannah, 11
