The San Antonio Zoo and Freetail Brewing Company have teamed up again to help animal protection efforts and promote wildlife programs around the globe. Special Conserveza beer cans have been designed and this year’s focus is all about Monarch butterflies.
CEO of the San Antonio Zoo, Tim Morrow, said, “Monarch butterflies is something that San Antonio is very familiar with and the San Antonio Zoo has been working on conservation efforts with this species for 15-16 years now.”
The zoo aids Kansas State researchers to study Monarch migration patterns and track travel directions. Each butterfly has to be netted and tagged with a specific tracking number in route to their southern Mexico migration destination. After breeding season, the numbers are sent back to gather data and conduct more valuable research. You can see these beautiful creatures up close at the San Antonio Zoo’s butterfly house where multiple different species are on display!
The previously featured animals on Conserveza beer since beginning this collaboration were a giraffe and a jaguar.
If you want to attract butterflies to your very own backyard, there’s a secret from the zoo that will help! Create a butterfly mash using beer to feed the magnificent flying insects using the recipe below. The addition of beer gives the Monarchs energy, helping them fly longer and further during their migration.
RECIPE FOR BUTTERFLY MASH
In a blender combine these ingredients:
- 3 organic bananas
- 1 ½ cups of Freetail Brewing Company Conserveza beer
- 1 cup of organic sugar
- Open and pour contents of three bee pollen capsules and three amino acid capsules
Once blended, lay the mash in a flat plate or tray and add sponges, rocks, or something solid for the butterflies to land on.
