Growing Green with New Earth and Ladybug. Mark Manning of New Earth Soils & Compost will discuss and provide information about cost effective composting. He will also explain bio solids, organic disposal and the role of the ladybug. This program is recommended for adults and families with older children. Free to attend but a donation of $3 per person OR $5 per family is suggested.

FREE, weekly workshops for kids, ages 5 – 12 at participating Home Depot stores. This week, your child learns to build a heart box. All kids get to keep their craft, receive a free certificate of achievement, a Workshop Apron, and a commemorative pin while supplies last. Children must be present at the store to participate in the workshop and receive the kit, apron and pin. Kids Workshop activities are scheduled on a first come/first served basis. Be sure to register online before attending to make sure there is room for your child. Please do not arrive before 9:00 a.m.

FREE heart screening for teens, ages 14 – 18 provided by AugustHeart. This free heart screening for teenagers can identify selected heart abnormalities in an effort to minimize the risk of sudden cardiac death. Many abnormalities of the heart can potentially cause sudden cardiac death and some of them can be detected by a simple, non-invasive, 20-minute test using an electrocardiogram and/or echocardiogram. Please register your teen ahead of time. Although the screening is free, AugustHeart pays $25 for each teen registered, whether or not they show up so please do show up!

Music with the Deltones: Join us for this musical event! The Deltones sing in celebration of Black History Month 2015 and Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc., a service sorority of predominately Black, college educated women founded in 1913 on the campus of Howard University in Washington, DC. Special Guests include the Antioch Missionary Baptist Church Youth Choir. Forest Hills Library also presents an exhibit reflecting the sorority’s rich history and its accomplishments January 29 – March 27, 2015.

Free Second Sunday at the Institute of Texan Cultures: Buffalo Soldier Day. The Institute of Texan Cultures and partner organizations will portray a living history of Buffalo Soldiers on the museum’s Free Second Sunday. Buffalo Soldier Day is set on the museum’s “Back 40” outdoor education area. It includes re-creation 1800s structures such as a frontier fort, log house and one-room schoolhouse. Inside the museum, gallery hosts will be available in the African-American Texans area, offering further information on African-Americans in Texas, including ties to Seminole scouts, and additional contributions African Americans have made in service to the armed forces.

Star Party! View the stars with local astronomers. Telescopes will be set up in the open mulched field of the savanna in PHP West. Parking available at the PHP Urban Ecology Center. In the case of inclement weather, the program will move to the PHP UEC Gathering Hall. This program is presented by the Phil Hardberger Park Conservancy, the Alamo Area Texas Master Naturalists, and San Antonio Parks & Recreation. It is free and no registration is necessary. A donation of $3/ person or $5/ family is suggested.

35th Annual San Antonio Home and Garden Show. Although tickets for adults are $9 each (and one ticket is good for admission all weekend), kids 16 and under and members of the military who present I.D. receive FREE admission to the San Antonio Home and Garden Show. Highlights of the show this year: the host from DIY Network, Jason Cameron, gives inside secrets on how to transform a house into a dream home; a kids’ station sponsored by Home Depot presents workshops; a pet fashion show; and Michelangelo (the Ninja Turtle) will be on site Saturday.

Nature Walk: Sunrise Bird Walk on the Oak Loop Trail. Follow expert birders on a trail through Hardberger Park to see, identify, and appreciate the birds in the area. Minors welcomed with parent or guardian. Dogs welcome on leashes if they’re properly socialized. Free to attend but suggested donation is $3 per person or $5 per family.

Military Salute Kickoff Day at the Briscoe Museum: The Briscoe kicks off its new year-round Military Salute Program which offers free admission to active duty members of the military and up to four family members. Admission to the Briscoe will be FREE ALL DAY ON FEBRUARY 28 FOR EVERYONE! Snacks, refreshments, entertainment, guided tours, and presentations are included.

San Antonio Symphony members perform at two San Antonio Public Library branches. Cellist Ryan Murphy appears at the Carver Branch Library and violinist Mary Ellen Goree will be at the Johnson Branch Library. These family-friendly performances are a great way to introduce your kids to an appreciation of and love for classical music in an informal setting.

Saturday, February 28, The Alamo, 300 Alamo Plaza, 78205, 4:00 p.m. discussion and 6:00 p.m. movie
Slab Cinema presents a free viewing of The Alamo movie (1960 version with John Wayne and Richard Widmark) at the Alamo. Due to inclement weather, this viewing has been moved indoors. At 4:00 p.m. there will be FREE seating for up to 80 people in Alamo Hall to join Alamo curator and historian Dr. Bruce Winders for a discussion on John Wayne’s 1960 production of The Alamo. Then, at 6:00 p.m. enjoy a screening of the film (200 FREE seats available for this showing).
