Free family friendly events and activities in San Antonio through Sept. 7 2014

Free in San Antonio is published each week on SanAntonioMomBlogs.com. It’s not an exhaustive list but, rather, a curated list of free (and almost free) events and activities families will enjoy. Check back throughout the week as more free events and activities may be added.

FREE coffee, Mondays in September (1, 8, 15, 22, 29), at participating San Antonio and New Braunfels Chick-Fil-A restaurants:

  • one free small hot coffee 6:30 a.m. – 10:30 a.m.
  • one free medium iced coffee between 2pm – 5pm

One free coffee per person per visit.

Now through September 27, four San Antonio public pools are free and open for swimming: Heritage, 1423 Ellison Dr.; Lady Bird Johnson, 10700 Nacogdoches; South Side Lions, 3100 Hiawatha; and Woodlawn, 221 Alexander Ave. For hours and details, visit the San Antonio Parks and Recreation website.

San Antonio | The Saga. This free video art installation, created by Xavier De Richemont, plays three times a night on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays on the facade of San Fernando Cathedral.

Tuesday, September 2, LEGO Store at North Star Mall, 5:00 p.m. until supplies last
FREE LEGO® Store Monthly Mini Model Build! This month: LEGO Racing Plane
On the first Tuesday of each month, LEGO Stores provide a limited quantity of free mini model sets for kids ages 6-14. One free per child while supplies last. Get there early (around 3:00 p.m. or 3:30 p.m.) for your spot in line!

Tuesday, September 2, Witte Museum, 3801 Broadway, 78209, 3:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Free Tuesdays at the Witte with no admission between the hours of 3:00 p.m. and 8:00 p.m. And, if you pay just $5, you can also see the cool (and awesomely disgusting) Grossology exhibit.

Wednesday, September 3, Krispy Kreme (1117 North Loop 1604 East, 78232 and 12328 IH 10 West, 78230), 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Free Family Night at Krispy Kreme: donut decorating, crafts, and games for all ages. San Antonio mom blogger Sara Phillips shares her family’s recent experience at Krispy Kreme’s Free Family Night.

Saturday, September 6, Phil Hardberger Park West, Urban Ecology Center Classroom, 8400 NW Military, 9:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Earth Science of Texas: David Turner with St. Mary’s University will present earth science for families with children. Find out what rocks you can find in Texas and how they were formed. Kid friendly craft included. (Suggested donation of $3.00 per individual or $5.00 per family)

Mariachis y Folkloricos. Free event featuring mariachis and folkloricos from San Antonio and the surrounding area.

Saturday, September 6, Mission Drive-in, 3100 Roosevelt Ave., dusk
The LEGO Movie. Visit the restored Mission Drive-In, but no cars on the lawn! Bring chairs, blankets and picnics. Sponsored by District 3 Councilwoman Rebecca Viagran.

Sunday, September 7, San Antonio Museum of Art, 200 W. Jones, 78215, 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m. AND 12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.
Free admission to the San Antonio Museum of Art (10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.)
AND
First Sundays for Families: Au Revoir Monsieur, Matisse! (12:00 p.m. – 4:00 p.m.)

Say farewell to Matisse with live music, art-making, French-inspired activities and a special family film. Kids get free admission. After 12:00 p.m., adults pay $10 each.

Sunday, September 7, John T. Floore’s Country Store, 14492 Old Bandera Rd., Helotes, TX, 78023, 6:00 p.m.
Family night and free dance featuring the Drugstore Cowboys.
