Free, family-friendly events in San Antonio through August 10, 2014

Free in San Antonio is published each week on It’s not an exhaustive list but, rather, a curated list of free (and almost free) events and activities families will enjoy. Check back throughout the week as more free events and activities may be added.

FREE, month-long art classes for kids, ages 5-17, in San Antonio at the Southwest School of Art. Registration is now open and spots fill quickly! Saturday Morning Discovery at the Southwest School of Art provides free two-hour art sessions on Saturdays for one month, for kids ages 5-17. San Antonio children get the opportunity to experiment with many different kinds of art techniques and media, all for free.

San Antonio | The Saga. This free video art installation, created by Xavier De Richemont, plays three times a night on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays on the facade of San Fernando Cathedral.

FREE swimming at San Antonio public outdoor pools:
The San Antonio public pool swimming season runs through Aug. 16. Hours of operation at the majority of the department’s 24 outdoor pools during the summer are Tuesday through Sunday from 1 to 7 p.m. with some pools open from 2 to 8 p.m.

Wednesday, August 6, Krispy Kreme (1117 North Loop 1604 East, 78232 and 12328 IH 10 West, 78230), 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Free Family Night at Krispy Kreme: donut decorating, crafts, and games for all ages. San Antonio mom blogger Sada Lewis recently wrote about Krispy Kreme’s fun, family event.

Wednesday, August 6, Pearl Stable, 200 E. Grayson Street, 78215, 5:30 p.m. – 10:30 p.m.
Free Summer Dance Hall Series at Pearl Stable. This free dance and music series, sponsored by Corona and Cadillac, has a line up hand-selected by San Antonio Jazz legend Doc Watkins. August 6 features Terry Cavanagh and the Alpine Express (German/Czech). The Summer Dance Hall Series runs every Wednesday at Pearl Stable, through August 27. Beer, wine, and water are available for purchase.

Thursday, August 7, Pearl Brewery, 303 Pearl Parkway, 78215
First Thursdays at Pearl – shops stay open until 8:00 p.m. and there will be music, special deals, and family fun.

Free Cycle-In Movies at Main Plaza: La Bamba

Saturday, August 9, San Antonio Children’s Museum, 305 E. Houston St, 78205, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Free admission to the San Antonio Children’s Museum as part of the Back to School Bash with Peg and Cat (free admission is guaranteed as long as you’re in line by noon!). Meet PBS characters, Peg + Cat who are making their first San Antonio appearance.

Free Family Art Day takes place at Inspire Art every second Saturday of the month.

Saturday, August 9, The Briscoe Western Art Museum, 210 W. Market Street, 78205, 11:00 a.m. and 1:00 p.m.
Story Stampede is offered at the Briscoe Western Art Museum on the second Saturday of every month at 11:00am and 1:00pm. Children 12 and under receive free admission. Adults are just $5 each.

Free Family Flicks at SAMA. This month’s free, outdoor family movie is A Monster in Paris.
