It’s hard to believe it’s 2017 already but we are kicking off the near year with a huge list of fun Free in San Antonio events!

We’ve made every effort to ensure that this list is accurate and up-to-date, however, some venues/events/activities make changes without notifying us. We recommend contacting them before visiting to be 100% sure that their free offerings are still available.

San Antonio | The Saga. This free video art installation, created by Xavier De Richemont, plays three times a night, weather permitting, on Tuesdays, Fridays, Saturdays, and Sundays on the facade of San Fernando Cathedral.

The San Antonio League of Sidewalk Astronomers (SALSA) offers free stargazing to the public every Wednesday evening beginning at sunset.

Imagination Playground at Hemisfair. This free, organized play event at Yanaguana Garden takes place every Monday from 10:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.

Tuesday, January 3: Whole Foods Quarry Market, 255 E Basse Rd #130, 78209, 10:00 a.m. – 11:00 a.m.
Join Whole Foods at the Quarry Market Cafe, the first Tuesday of every month, for the Kids Club Story Time. There will be a story, a snack and some fun activities! This monthly event is free – register here.

And, remember: during all other open days/times, the Briscoe offers free admission, year-round, to children 12 and under and to all active military and their families (up to 4 people).

Free admission to The DoSeum on the first and third Tuesday of every month! Only the first 1,200 guests will be admitted so arrive early. Parking is free but limited – another good reason to be there early. Remember: no outside food allowed and umbrella strollers only inside the museum. The cafe will be open with food and drinks for sale.

Join us for ‘Dance in the Park!’, a FREE dance celebration in partnership between the San Antonio Dance Umbrella and Yanaguana Gardens at Hemisfair. We will be located by the splash pads.

Join Camp Gladiator as they host a FREE Friday evening fitness camp that promises a fun and motivating environment where men and women of all ages and fitness levels can push themselves to reach their goals. There is no fee for these classes. Camp Gladiator’s mission is to positively impact the physical fitness and ultimately the lives of as many people as possible!

Saturday, January 7: Home Depot locations around San Antonio, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
FREE, once-a-month workshops for kids, ages 5 – 12 at participating Home Depot stores. This week, your child will build a Crate Toolbox. Kids’ workshops are on a first come/first served basis. Register your child online ahead of time to make sure there is room available.

Saturday, January 7: La Villita, 418 La Villita St., 78205, 10:00 a.m. – 5:00 p.m.
The San Antonio Coffee Festival is free and open to all coffee-lovers! Taste amazing fresh, locally roasted coffee from all over the world. Meet local coffee artisans who will roast and brew 40+ coffees. Appreciate the many people who pilot a coffee bean from crop to cup. Admission is free. Speciality Coffee Tasting Flights will be available for purchase.

H-E-B Cinema on the Plaza. Bring your lawn chairs or blankets to the Plaza under the glow of the Tobin Center and enjoy 2001: A Space Odyssey! The plaza will open an hour before the movie starts. No outside food or drinks are allowed, but concessions will be available for purchase- including full bar service. No Pets Please.

Saturday, January 14: Hemisfair, 434 S Alamo St., 78205, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
MIX FIT SA is proud to host a yoga class with mindful movement. This class will be characterized by flowing poses and sequences that are linked to the breath. Together, we will flow through to intertwine the postures with intention, creating a deeper connection with the mind and body. The class is carefully designed to flow with music ranging from Beyonce to Otis Redding. Come with an open mind and open heart. This FREE yoga class is open to the public.
Bring your own mat. Open level, beginners welcome.

Saturday, January 14: Cibolo Nature Center, meet at Visitor’s Center, 140 City Park Road, Boerne, 9:00 a.m. – 12:00 p.m.
Join Cibolo Nature Center for their 2nd Saturday Volunteer Day of Service. Volunteers will focus on beautifying the grounds and weeding & pruning plants. If you have gloves, bring them. Also, wear sturdy shoes.

Traders Village will host a toy giveaway in celebration of Dia De Los Ninos, it’s Jugueton 2017. Giving back to the kids of San Antonio. During this annual event, Univision will be handing out toys to hundreds of children of all ages. This event features a family-friendly atmosphere with activities and giveaways for all in attendance. The event is free, but parking is $4.

Join us for the Final Round of our Sounds Like KPAC talent competition, featuring music, art, and writings inspired by KPAC 88.3 FM! Enjoy performances from some of our area’s best young musicians in both Solo and Ensemble categories. The show will be recorded for later broadcast on KPAC 88.3 FM and KTXI 90.1 FM. The show also features an art gallery and inspiring essays and poetry. After the winners are announced, everyone is invited to a post-show reception at the nearby Koehler Cultural Center.

Saturday, January 21: 375 County Road 144, Floresville, 78114, 5:30 p.m. – 9:00 p.m.
Join park rangers and the San Antonio League of Sidewalk Astronomers for a Star Party at Rancho de las Cabras. The site, which is part of San Antonio Missions National Historical Park, was the ranch associated with Mission Espada. Kid’s activities and hot chocolate will be provided and the San Antonio League of Sidewalk Astronomers (SALSA) will provide their expertise while assisting participants in using SALSA’s telescopes to enjoy the night sky. Additional telescopes are welcome! Bring a flashlight (red cellophane will be provided), snacks, chairs and dress for the weather. Parking on site is limited, carpooling is encouraged. The event is weather permitting.

Saturday, January 21: Medina River Natural Area Pavilion, 15890 Highway 16 S., 78264, 6:00 p.m. – 8:00 p.m.
Join the San Antonio Astronomical Association for a Star & Planet Viewing Party. They bring their high tech telescopes to Medina River Natural Area. Weather permitting, we’ll also watch video of the universe. Refreshments and a child-friendly craft included. No registration required. Suggested donation of $3 per person or $5 per family.

Rodeo Warm Up with Johnny Rodriguez. Traders Village knows the Rodeo isn’t until February but they want to prepare you with great dancing music provided by Johnny Rodriguez and his band. Bring your lawn chair and enjoy this great music. His 35 albums and 45 singles will provide plenty of great music. Music will be in Brown Expo but show times have not yet been posted. The event is free, but parking is $3.

The free 39th Annual Cowboy Breakfast kicks off rodeo season and provides free food (including breakfast tacos, biscuits and gravy, sausage, juice, coffee, sweet rolls, and more) along with live music.

Friday, January 27: Huebner Oaks (parking lot outside of Chipotle), 11075 I-10, 78230, 11:00 a.m. – 6:40 p.m.
Compassion – An interactive tour of life in the developing world. This free event features an interactive journey through the true stories of children living in developing countries like the Philippines, Kenya, Uganda and the Dominican Republic. In over 2,000 square feet of interactive exhibit space, visitors will step inside homes, markets and schools — without getting on a plane. Each child’s story starts in poverty but ends in hope.

1,300 fruit and nut trees will be available for adoption at the seventh annual Jammin’ Jams Fruit and Nut Tree Adoption – while supplies last. Meet us at The Pearl (parking lot between Avenue A and Hwy 281, just north of Pearl Parkway). The City of San Antonio’s Parks and Recreation Department, in collaboration with the Alamo Forest Partnership, is bringing this to you in an effort to promote food security, enhance canopy coverage, and diversify and beautify our community.

This free event features an interactive journey through the true stories of children living in developing countries like the Philippines, Kenya, Uganda and the Dominican Republic. In over 2,000 square feet of interactive exhibit space, visitors will step inside homes, markets and schools — without getting on a plane. Each child’s story starts in poverty but ends in hope.
