Introducing our family rock band – this year’s Halloween costumes thanks to a trip to our local Goodwill store! Finding the perfect Halloween costume doesn’t have to be a time consuming and expensive endeavor. This year, skip the big box stores and online searching and head to your local Goodwill instead.
The Goodwill San Antonio stores are the perfect source for a last minute, one-of-a-kind Halloween costume. Plus your purchases help support the Goodwill San Antonio mission of changing lives through the power of work. It’s a win-win! Here are my seven tips for scoring the perfect Goodwill Halloween costume for yourself or your entire family:
7 Tips for Getting a Great Halloween Costume at the Goodwill
1. Go with some costume ideas in mind, but be flexible
Part of the fun of shopping at Goodwill is the thrill of the hunt – you don’t know what you’ll find until you get there! It helps to come with a few costume ideas in mind to direct your searching. Check out the Goodwill San Antonio Halloween Lookbook for inspiration for awesome costume ideas that you can create with common Goodwill items.
Finding this amazing black leather vest was what started me down the path of an 80s rock band theme for our family:
Once I settled on a costume theme, I then searched for rocker clothing for our family in a coordinating palette of black and white, with a touch of hot pink! Many Goodwill stores organize their clothing by size and color, making it easy to find exactly what you need:
2. Head to the staff picks
If you aren’t sure what you want, the Goodwill has done some of the work for you. Many of the 23 San Antonio Goodwill stores have handpicked and styled clothing perfect for a Halloween costume. Look for their “Halloween Headquarters” signs and “Staff Picks” rack near the entry:
3. Go for the staples
Almost all Goodwill stores will tend to clothing in each of these areas with lots of costume potential:
- Prom and wedding dresses
- Business suits
- Medical scrubs
- Western wear
- Pajamas and robes
- Hawaiian shirts and floral dresses
- Sports jerseys and uniforms
I found several wedding dresses for being a scary (or not so scary!) bride on Halloween:
4. It’s all in the accessories
In addition to clothes, the Goodwill stores carry a large selection of belts, scarves, shoes, purses, and jewelry. I was able to outfit our costumes with studded belts, scarves, and bandanas, and even a pair of boots for my daughter. I found everything I needed for my daughter’s rocker costume for only $17!
It turned out so cute!
5. Don’t miss the Halloween aisle
Look beyond the clothing racks for a designated Halloween aisle near their housewares. Here you will often find brand new costumes, masks, wigs, face paint, and other accessories at greatly reduced prices. I was able to score brand new rocker wigs that truly made our outfits for only $3.99 a piece!
These rocker wigs were amazing! I crack up every time I see this photo of my husband. I found a $1.99 bandana to wrap around the wig for an extra rocker touch.
I also found a pack of new Halloween body tattoo stickers for $1.99 that the girls loved wearing:
6. Look at the color of the tag
You can score an even better deal with the color of the week! Items with that color of price tag are an additional 50% off.
7. Round out your costume with things you have at home
We topped off our rock band attire with some inexpensive inflatable guitars and microphones that my daughters already had in their toy collection at home.
I also created fingerless rocker gloves by cutting off the bottom of a sock and cutting a notch on the side for a thumb to slip through. So easy!
We are so excited to take our show on the road this October 31st! I couldn’t have found such a unique set of outfits anywhere else but at my neighborhood Goodwill San Antonio store. I hope you head to your local Goodwill store for some fun Halloween shopping!
