We talk to our children, regularly, about how important it is to help others who are not as fortunate as we are.
Every year our family donates frozen turkeys and money to Food4SA, a San Antonio Food Bank initiative, through a partnership with Security Service Federal Credit Union, that aims to collect a million pounds of food each November (and one year, they took my pic to post on Twitter!).
Last December, my daughter and I visited  Good Samaritan Community Services to donate groceries for the holidays. We were amazed and touched to see the incredible number of donations from people all across our city. Good Sam collected enough groceries to provide 600 families in need with Christmas dinners.
So, yes. We talk to our kids about how not everyone has enough to eat. And, in small ways, we try to help. But when I hear that one in five American children does not have enough to eat, I realize we have to do more.
September is Hunger Awareness Month and bloggers in San Antonio and around the country are writing and working to raise awareness of this issue.
But, other than donating to a food bank, how can you help?
5 Cool Things you can do so no kid (goes) hungry
1. Follow the Moms Fight Hunger Blog Hop all September long to read the blog posts that will be added regularly on the topic of hunger and the work being done to ensure No Kid (goes) Hungry.
2. Like the Moms Fighting Hunger Facebook page for information on how you and your family can get involved in the fight against hunger (from small, easy ideas to more time-intensive volunteer opportunities).
3. Like the San Antonio Food Bank‘s Facebook page. During the month of September, an anonymous donor will contribute $1 for every new like on the page. $1 donated = $13 dollars of food the Food Bank can provide.
4. Follow Moms Fight Hunger on Twitter to learn how moms are joining forces all over the world to kick hunger to the curb. RT the important messages, statistics, and ideas you find there.
5. Visit the San Antonio Food Bank’s 30 Ways in 30 Days for a comprehensive list of things big and small that you and your family can do together to combat hunger.
What’s our family going to do? We’ll continue to donate to Food4SA and Good Samaritan Community Services. But we plan to find new ways to increase our involvement in the fight against hunger. A neighborhood food drive is the first thing that comes to mind but I know we’ll find other ways to make a difference too.
If your family plans to get involved this month or any time of year so No Kid (Goes) Hungry, how will you help? I’d love to hear your ideas!
Thanks for all this great information, colleen. You truly amaze me, daily! XO
Aw, thanks, sweetie! Thanks for commenting and helping get the word out about Hunger Awareness Month.
Great list- I’m so glad so many people are working together to help feed children.
Thanks for commenting, Carolyn! I’m off to read your post now. So glad to meet you through the process of blogging about how to fight against hunger.
My family is looking for ways to help on Thanksgiving or Thanksgiving week. Do you know of anyone or any place that needs help serving food or putting baskets together. We could also donate food but was really looking to get kids involved in actually helping by serving…
Thanks…
Hi, Julie. If you’re in San Antonio, I was going to suggest that the Jimenez dinner is always looking for volunteers to serve on Thanksgiving Day. But I just checked their site and they have closed volunteer opportunities for the year.
Maybe contact the San Antonio Food Bank to see where they need help?
